Conservation Planning

The National Land Trust Alliance in its Standards and Practices recommends that a local trust identify “specific natural resources or geographic areas where it will focus its work” and establish “a defined process for selecting land and easement projects, including written selection criteria that are consistent with its mission.

Estuary

The Lower Nehalem Community Trust, recognizing the ecological value of lands around the estuary, chose this region as one area of focus for its work. The Trust works with willing landowners, governmental agencies and other environmental groups to find ways to protect and preserve the most important environmental resources adjacent to the estuary.

Specifically, the Trust wishes to protect and preserve

  • estuarine wetlands,
  • sitka spruce swamps,
  • estuarine streams critical to the survival of chum salmon,
  • estuarine sloughs utilized by coho salmon as rearing habitat,
  • critical habitat for migrating birds,
  • estuarine habitat critical to the survival of rare, endangered or sensitive plant and animal species, and
  • land adjacent to property currently preserved for wildlife including land next to our current holdings.

Watershed

The Lower Nehalem Community Trust and The Nature Conservancy have submitted a grant proposal  requesting funds to identify other areas in the Nehalem watershed that support ecologically important systems, plant communities, and/or species and build partnerships needed to implement priority conservation strategies in those areas.

We will in conjunction with a diversity of watershed stakeholders develop a "Comprehensive Conservation Action Plan" using protocols developed by the Nature Conservancy.   Once this task is completed we will be in a better position to determine appropriate strategies for conserving these areas.

In preparation we have assembled a collections of maps displaying important features and habitats in the watershed.  The maps are grouped into the five sets displayed below.

If you would like to view these maps and have not already installed Google Earth on you computer click here and install it now.

Use the left side bar's "temporary places" to manage the map's legend. Open the drop down menus for the chosen map and select your desired location for the legend.
