Stewardship

What We Do

Stewardship is the practice of carefully managing land usage to ensure natural systems are maintained or enhanced for future generations.  The Lower Nehalem Community Trust evaluates property to determine its current and potential conservation values. A land management plan is developed and implemented based on this analysis.  This plan outlines the restoration, maintenance and monitoring activities needed to insure well functioning ecological systems.

Implementation of these management plans often requires that we obtain grant funds and usually require many, many hours of volunteer time. If you are interested in helping look at the Volunteer section of the website.

The Trust enhances the conservation values of the land by

  • Removing buildings from the land,
  • Clearing exotic species such as Himalayan blackberry and Scot’s broom,
  • Removing dikes to re-establish estuarine processes,
  • Filling drainage ditches to re-establish wetlands and
  • Re-establishing native plant communities.
