ESTABLISH A NATIVE PLANT COMMUNITY IN WHEELER

March 18, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

WHAT WE’LL DO: We will continue our work to remove invasive species from the corner of our Zimmerman property in Wheeler. We are whittling away at the Himalayan Blackberry and Scotch Broom. We need to keep up with these invasive species each season because they will quickly out-compete the native species we have planted if they are not removed. The work at Zimmerman will occur over multiple seasons, until the invasive seed stocks in the soil are no longer viable and/or the roots of existing plants are removed or dead.

WHERE: Meet at the intersection of Hemlock and Highway 101, at the north end of Wheeler, Oregon. (See map)

WHEN: Fridays, February 4 to Mach 18. Please arrive by 10:00 a.m. We’ll work until about noon.

WHAT TO BRING: We will provide tools, though if you have ones you prefer to use, you may bring them. Please wear sturdy, covered shoes, dress for variable weather, and bring protective eyewear if you can. If you have a favorite pair of gloves, please bring them, or we’ll lend you a pair.  Please have a mask with you, as well. (Although we will be working outside, we ask that you have a mask on whenever you work within 6 feet of another volunteer.) We will work together to remove invasive plants, so long-sleeved shirts and eye protection can help keep you safe from scrapes and cuts.

If you are are new to LNCT and are interested in participating in our activities, please sign up to volunteer with us through our Volunteer Signup page! When you express an interest in Stewardship you are not required to attend every week, but you will receive a weekly stewardship email with updates, Stewardship event announcements and photos of recent events. It is a fun way to keep up with our activities and progress.
