SATURDAY Stewardship Event!

September 18, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

The September 18 Saturday Stewardship Project will continue one of the most challenging  but important Stewardship efforts of the year. We have made excellent progress, thanks to many dedicated hands on deck, and we should be approaching the end (for this patch, at least) in just a few weeks!

We will continue our pursuit of the blackberry patch on the wildlife sanctuary area of Alder Creek Farm, just south of the Garden fence. We are focusing on this one patch, to better understand how these patches evolve, and how best to limit their spread and remove them, so we can begin to bring this nasty invasive under control throughout the Farm.

As we finish up we’ll also be looking into what native flowers we’ll be able to put in their place, to out-compete the invasive grasses and blackberries.

You will not be required to fight your way into a blackberry thicket! (unless you want to) We will continue to shrink the patch by working towards the middle from the periphery, digging out roots as we go. Someone can also work to remove some of the berry plants that have established themselves in the neighboring rushes.

Please meet at Alder Creek Farm at 9:00 a.m. (see map, below)

We encourage you to bring treats to share. We will provide sturdy gloves and tools, but if you have a favorite pair of gloves, please bring them along (especially if they’re nice and thick). If you have chaps, they might help too.

I hope to see you there!

The elk thank you, too!
