About Dave Wells:
Before I knew about forestry, I played amongst trees and creeks. Fortunately, I found a career that allowed me to continue some of that play and also engage the creative side of my brain, forestry. Following graduating with a Bachelor of Science, Forestry from the University of Washington I walked in the Tillamook State Forest for the Oregon Department of Forestry for a little more than 40 years and for the last 5 years on private forest land in Tillamook and contiguous counties. What I’ve learned is that it’s not the walking that is important, it’s all the connections going on in the forest. Sometimes that connection is between trees and roads as in the case of logging, sometimes it’s a trees connection with other trees, and still other times how streams connect from headwater to the Pacific. These connections with their amazing diversity and dynamic nature continue to intrigue me. It’s why I haven’t gotten tired of forestry and when possible share what I’ve experienced with others.

What We’ll Do:
In my work as a Technical Service Provider preparing a Forest Management Plan for the Headwaters forest, a number of stands (areas of forest with similar conditions) were identified. The goal for the Headwaters Property is to develop a set of forest characteristics that in the future will look like an old growth forest. Through observation and then participatory forestry, we’ll develop a set of data for analysis and think through what changes (if any) are needed to create an old growth stand.

What to Expect and bring
:
Expect a moderate 1-2 mile hike with some off-trail walking on uneven ground.
Bring: Lunch, water, layers for the weather, comfortable hiking/walking shoes
